iPhone 16 vs iPhone 16e: which is cheaper to own?

The 16e costs less on day one, but the gap changes with the condition you buy and with time. What you give up for the saving, what you keep, and the live UK prices for both.

Apple sells two 6.1-inch iPhones from the same generation at two prices, and the question people type is the right one: not "which is better", but which one costs less to own once you count what you give up, how you buy it, and what it will be worth later. Here is the difference in plain terms, then the live prices for both.

What is actually different between the iPhone 16 and the 16e?

They share more than the marketing suggests. Both have a 6.1-inch OLED screen, the A18 chip, a 48-megapixel main camera, USB-C, Face ID, the Action button, and the same iOS with the same run of updates ahead of them, because they launched only months apart (September 2024 and February 2025).

What the iPhone 16 has and the 16e does not:

  • A second camera. The 16 adds an ultra-wide lens. The 16e has one camera, which is a very good one, but there is no wide-angle option and no macro.
  • Camera Control. The dedicated capture button on the side of the 16 is missing on the 16e.
  • The Dynamic Island. The 16e keeps the older notch.
  • MagSafe. The 16e charges wirelessly, but only with standard Qi, more slowly and without the magnets, so MagSafe wallets, mounts and chargers do not snap on.
  • More colours. The 16e comes in black or white.

What the 16e has that the 16 does not: Apple's own C1 modem, and Apple rates its battery life a little longer. In day-to-day use the two phones feel the same speed, since the chip is the same generation with one fewer graphics core on the 16e.

Read the "New" row first: that is the gap Apple set. Then read down, because the gap is rarely the same in the refurbished row, and that is where the real decision usually sits.

Does a refurbished iPhone 16 beat a new iPhone 16e?

Often it comes close, and sometimes it wins. The iPhone 16 has been on sale longer, so the refurbished market for it is deeper: more sellers, more grades, more stock. The 16e arrived later, so its refurbished stock is thinner and priced nearer to new.

That gives you a comparison most people never make: a refurbished 16, with the extra camera and MagSafe, against a brand-new 16e with a full manufacturer warranty and a fresh battery. Which is better value depends on how you weigh the cover. A refurbished phone comes with whatever the seller states on the listing, and a battery that has aged a little; a new one comes with Apple's warranty and the retailer's returns process. Price that cover in before you compare the numbers, and read the grade on the listing, not the word.

Will they last the same time?

Yes, as far as anyone can say in advance. Both run the same iOS generation on the same chip family, and Apple has supported iPhones for years past their launch. The 16e's newer modem does not change that. If you keep phones for four or five years, the software side of the decision is a draw, and it comes down to the camera and MagSafe on one side and the launch price and battery on the other.

How have the prices moved?

New iPhones drift down through their first year and drop again when the next generation arrives; refurbished prices fall faster, because the stock deepens. Here is the cheapest price per day for each, new and refurbished together:

What to do

  • Decide on MagSafe and the second camera first. If you need either, it is the iPhone 16 and the only question is new or refurbished.
  • Compare at the same storage. A 128 GB 16e against a 256 GB 16 is not a price gap, it is a different phone.
  • Put a refurbished iPhone 16 next to a new 16e, and price the warranty and battery certainty into the difference.
  • If the numbers are close, take the new phone: the cover is worth more than a small saving.
  • Set a price drop alert on whichever you choose and buy when it moves, not when the advert says it has.
