iPhone Air vs iPhone 17: which is the better buy?
Apple charges £200 more for the iPhone Air, yet the big UK shops sell it for £100 less than the iPhone 17. What each phone gives you, what the Air leaves out, and live UK prices.

Apple's own store sells the iPhone Air from £1,099 and the iPhone 17 from £899, so on Apple's price list the Air is the premium phone. The big UK shops tell a different story. On 19/09/2026 the 256 GB iPhone Air was £799 at Currys, Amazon and Argos, with John Lewis listing the same price but out of stock, while the 256 GB iPhone 17 was £899 at every big shop, Apple included. So the question most people type, "iPhone Air vs iPhone 17", now comes with an unusual twist: the thinner, pricier-looking phone is the cheaper one to buy.
Which is cheaper, the iPhone Air or the iPhone 17?
At the big shops, the Air, by £100: £799 against £899 at Currys, Amazon and Argos. eBay sellers narrow the gap, with the cheapest new listings on 19/09/2026 at £669.70 for the Air and £710.50 for the iPhone 17. Here are both phones side by side, with new and refurbished kept apart and the cheaper cell in each row marked:
| Condition | iPhone Air (256 GB) | iPhone 17 (256 GB) |
|---|---|---|
| New | £639.10eBay | £699.00eBay |
| Refurbished | £602.00Back Market | £679.99Back Market |
New: the iPhone Air (256 GB) is £59.90 cheaper. Refurbished: the iPhone Air (256 GB) is £77.99 cheaper.

The gap holds on refurbished phones too. On 19/09/2026 a refurbished Air started at £633 at Back Market, and Amazon Renewed had one for £659.99. The cheapest refurbished iPhone 17 was £699.99 on eBay, only £10.51 less than a new one listed there by an eBay seller, so a refurbished 17 saves very little today.
What does the iPhone 17 have that the Air does not?
A second camera, more battery and a SIM slot. The differences are all on Apple's comparison page:
| iPhone Air | iPhone 17 | |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 6.5-inch, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On | 6.3-inch, ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On |
| Chip | A19 Pro | A19 |
| Rear cameras | One: 48MP Fusion Main (1x and 2x) | Two: 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Ultra Wide (0.5x, 1x and 2x) |
| Macro, Cinematic mode, spatial photos | No | Yes |
| Video playback | Up to 27 hours (40 with the iPhone Air MagSafe Battery) | Up to 30 hours |
| Fast charging | 50% in 30 minutes with a 20W adapter | 50% in 20 minutes with a 40W adapter |
| Storage | 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB | 256 GB or 512 GB |
| Thickness and weight | 5.64 mm, 165 g | 7.95 mm, 177 g |
| Frame | Titanium | Aluminium |
| SIM | eSIM only | Nano-SIM and eSIM |
The camera is the difference you will notice most. With one lens on the back, the Air has no 0.5x ultra wide shot for landscapes, rooms and group photos, no macro mode for close-ups, and no Cinematic mode for video. Both phones take the same 48MP main photos and have the same 18MP front camera.
The battery is the second. Apple rates the iPhone 17 at three more hours of video, and it charges faster with a stronger adapter. If your phone is often flat by the evening, that matters more than 12 grams.
What does the Air do better?
It is the bigger screen in the smaller-feeling phone: 6.5 inches against 6.3, yet 12 grams lighter and less than three quarters of the thickness. It has the A19 Pro chip rather than the A19, and a titanium frame. It is also the only one of the two you can buy with 1 TB of storage.
There is one catch to check before you buy. The Air takes eSIMs only, with no slot for a physical SIM card. Most people will not notice, but check that your network, and any SIM you buy when travelling, supports eSIM.
Which should you buy?
- Buy the iPhone Air if you want a large screen that is easy to carry, you rarely use the ultra wide camera, and you would rather keep the £100. At £799 it is the better value of the two while the shops hold that price.
- Buy the iPhone 17 if you take a lot of wide shots, group photos or close-ups, if your battery runs low by the evening, or if you need a SIM slot.
If the Air is your pick, buy it from a shop rather than from Apple: the same phone was £300 cheaper at Currys, Amazon and Argos on 19/09/2026. At the same price, John Lewis also includes a two-year guarantee when it has stock.

What to do
- Decide on the camera first: if you use the 0.5x ultra wide, buy the iPhone 17; if you do not, the Air saves you £100.
- For the Air, buy from a shop, not Apple's store, while the shops sell it for less.
- Before you buy the Air, check that your network supports eSIM.
- Thinking refurbished? Compare Back Market and Amazon Renewed on the same grade, and check a new price first.
- If neither price suits you yet, set a price alert on the product page and we will email you when it drops.
