PS5 vs PS5 Pro: is the Pro worth it in the UK?

What the PS5 Pro adds over a PS5 Slim, what it leaves out of the box, whether a refurbished console is the better buy, and live UK prices for each.

Every PS5 game runs on every PS5, so the question is not which console plays what. It is what the extra money for a PS5 Pro actually buys, what you still have to add to it, and whether buying refurbished changes the sums. Here is the difference in plain terms, then the live UK prices.

What does the PS5 Pro add?

The Pro is the same console family with more power and more room:

  • A faster graphics chip. Games that Sony marks as PS5 Pro Enhanced run at higher resolutions, hold their frame rate more steadily, or both.
  • PSSR upscaling. PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution uses machine learning to sharpen the picture on a 4K TV, so enhanced games look cleaner without giving up smoothness.
  • Twice the storage. 2 TB against the 1 TB in a PS5 Slim, which matters when a single game can take well over 100 GB.
  • Wi-Fi 7. The Slim has Wi-Fi 6. You only notice the difference with a router that supports it.

What stays the same: the games, the DualSense controller, PlayStation Plus and PS VR2 support. There are no games that only run on the Pro.

What does the PS5 Pro leave out?

  • A disc drive. Out of the box the Pro plays downloads only. To play discs you add Sony's detachable disc drive, the same one that fits the PS5 Slim Digital.
  • A vertical stand. It is sold separately if you want the console upright.

Is the PS5 Pro worth it on a 1080p TV?

Usually not. The Pro's extra power shows most on a 4K TV. On a 1080p screen some enhanced games run a little smoother or look slightly cleaner, but the gap is small, and a PS5 Slim gives you the same games for much less. If a new TV is on your list anyway, buy the TV first: it changes what the Pro is worth.

Which is cheaper today?

The fair comparison is the Pro against the PS5 Slim Digital, because neither has a disc drive. New, refurbished and second hand are kept apart, and the cheaper cell in each row is marked.

Sony launched the Pro in the UK at £699.99 on 07/11/2024, and on 02/04/2026 it raised the recommended price of every PS5: the Pro to £789.99 and the Slim Digital to £519.99. Sony's UK site still listed both prices on 01/10/2026. So a new Pro at about £789 is Sony's price, not a shop's mark-up, and at Sony's prices the Pro costs £270 more than the Slim Digital.

On 01/10/2026 the shops selling the Pro themselves charged Sony's price or 99p under. Currys had the Pro at £789, one per customer, against £519 for the Slim Digital; Argos had them at £789.99 and £519.99. John Lewis listed the Pro at £789.99 but had none online, and Amazon sold no new Pro itself, only marketplace sellers from £975. So there is little to gain by waiting for a cheaper Pro: the shops were already at Sony's price, and what ran short was stock. Here is where it was in stock on 01/10/2026.

Is a refurbished PS5 cheaper than a new one?

Less often than with phones. New consoles hold their price, so refurbished listings sit close to new ones and sometimes above them. On 15/09/2026 the cheapest new PS5 Slim, with or without the disc drive, cost less than every refurbished one we found. The Pro was the exception, with a refurbished console under the cheapest new one. Check both rows on the same day before you decide:

If a refurbished console does come in cheaper, read the listing before the price:

  • What is in the box. A controller, the HDMI cable and the power lead should all be there, and a disc model should still have its drive.
  • The grade. A cosmetic grade describes scuffs and scratches, not how well the console works. Here is what the grades mean.
  • The warranty. Who gives it and for how long. A refurbished console bought from a business comes with your full consumer rights, which a private second hand sale does not. The difference, in plain terms.

How have PS5 Pro prices moved?

Console prices move less than phone prices, but they do move, often around big game launches and sales events. Here is the cheapest PS5 Pro price per day, new and refurbished together:

What to do

  • Start with your screen. With a 4K TV and games you play marked PS5 Pro Enhanced, the Pro is worth pricing; otherwise start with a PS5 Slim.
  • If you own discs, add the disc drive to the Pro's price, or buy the Slim with the drive built in.
  • Compare like for like: the Pro against the Slim Digital, both without a drive.
  • Check refurbished against new on the same day. New was the cheaper Slim on 15/09/2026, but on 01/10/2026 a refurbished Slim Digital graded Good cost £399 on eBay, £120 under a new one at Currys.
  • Pay Sony's price, not a premium: on 01/10/2026 Currys and Argos sold the Pro at £789.99 or 99p under. If your shop has sold out, set a price drop alert on the product page rather than paying a marketplace seller more.
