Refurbished iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max: is it worth it in the UK?

What a refurbished iPhone 16 Pro or Pro Max costs in the UK at Back Market, Amazon, musicMagpie, refurbed, eBay, Gadcet and Apple, against new.

Apple stopped selling the iPhone 16 Pro new when its successors arrived, so refurbished is now the main way to buy one. We read every refurbished seller we compare on 21/10/2026, and Apple's own refurbished store, for the 16 Pro and the 16 Pro Max.

Is a refurbished iPhone 16 Pro worth it?

Yes, if a Pro is what you want: on 21/10/2026 a refurbished 16 Pro cost about half what a new Pro costs at the shops. Apple's own refurbished store had no 16 Pro, and its 16 Pro Max cost far more than anyone else's.

iPhonePrice on 21/10/2026
16 Pro 128GBRefurbished from £516; none from Apple; not sold new by the shops (one private eBay listing marked New, £848)
16 Pro 256GBRefurbished from £555; none from Apple; £444 under a new iPhone 17 Pro 256GB (£999)
16 Pro Max 512GBRefurbished from £726; £393 under Apple's refurbished £1,119; £573 under a new 17 Pro Max 512GB (£1,299)
Unlocked, the cheapest in stock, all at Back Market (graded Fair), read on 21/10/2026. Back Market read through a page reader, as it showed us a security check. New prices are Argos's for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max; Apple itself now sells the iPhone 18 Pro, from £1,199. For new prices across the range, see iPhone prices in the UK.

A newer Pro has a newer chip and cameras; whether that is worth £444 to you is the real question, and when the saving is worth it works through it.

iPhone 16 Pro or 16 Pro Max refurbished?

The Max adds a bigger screen (6.9 inches against 6.3) and a bigger battery, and it never came with 128GB, so it starts at 256GB. Refurbished, the gap was small on 21/10/2026: at Back Market a 16 Pro Max 256GB cost £602 against £555 for a 16 Pro 256GB, £47 more, and at refurbed £656 against £558.

So if you want the bigger screen or the longer battery life, the step up costs less refurbished than it ever did new. If you want the smallest price, the 16 Pro 128GB from £516 is the cheapest way into a Pro.

Which grade should you buy?

Fair or Good, unless marks on the phone bother you. The grade describes the outside; every grade from these sellers should work fully, and the warranty is the same across grades at each one. Back Market grades Fair, Good, Excellent and Premium; musicMagpie Good, Very Good and Pristine; refurbed Good, Very good, Excellent and Premium. At refurbed on 21/10/2026, Very good added £20 to the 16 Pro 128GB and Premium £140.99.

What each grade means.

What should you check before buying?

  1. The battery. Apple fits a new battery and outer shell on every refurbished iPhone (its refurbished page, read on 21/10/2026). Back Market says all its phones have solid battery health, and sells a new battery as an option: it took the 16 Pro 128GB from £516 to £703 that day. Elsewhere, ask for the battery health figure.
  2. The warranty and returns. On 21/10/2026: Apple a one-year warranty with free returns; Back Market a 12-month seller warranty and free 30-day returns; refurbed at least 12 months and 30-day free returns; musicMagpie a free 12-month warranty and 14 days to change your mind; Gadcet 12 months and 30-day returns; musicMagpie's eBay shop 30-day returns.
  3. Unlocked, and the SIM. The phones we read at Back Market, refurbed, musicMagpie, Gadcet and on eBay were unlocked; check the listing on Amazon. A UK 16 Pro takes a physical SIM and an eSIM; refurbed also offered two-eSIM and two-physical-SIM versions at extra cost, which are models made for other countries.
  4. The capacity. "16 Pro" covers 128GB to 1TB. Match the storage on the listing before you compare prices.

What to do

  1. Decide between the 16 Pro and the Pro Max first: refurbished, the Max cost about £50 to £100 more at the same storage on 21/10/2026.
  2. Start at Back Market, Amazon Renewed, musicMagpie and refurbed, and compare them on the same day, grade for grade.
  3. Skip Apple's refurbished Pro Max unless you want Apple's new battery and shell: it was £393 dearer.
  4. Buy from a seller with 12 months of cover and at least 14 days to return it. Our refurbished iPhone 16 guide covers the standard model.
