eBay Refurbished explained: what the badge means, the four grades, the one-year guarantee, and when it beats Back Market
eBay UK's eBay Refurbished programme read on 03/11/2026: who refurbishes the items, what Certified, Excellent, Very Good and Good mean, the minimum 12-month seller guarantee and 30-day returns, seven badged listings against our rows, and the pages where eBay was the cheapest refurbished option that day.

On this page
Open a refurbished phone on eBay and a blue block sits under the price: "Refurbished on eBay. Got you covered. One-year guarantee included." It is the badge of the eBay Refurbished programme, and it is on most of the refurbished eBay rows on our product pages, whether the seller is musicMagpie, Currys Clearance, Argos or a phone trader in Hounslow. On 03/11/2026 we read eBay UK's own pages for the programme, its guarantee page, seven badged listings that are the refurbished eBay row on our pages, and our rows for the same seven products the same afternoon. This is what the badge promises, what it leaves to the seller, and where it was the cheapest way to buy that day.
What is eBay Refurbished?
A set of rules for sellers, with eBay's name on the result. eBay's programme page, read at 16:40 on 03/11/2026, puts it in four steps: products "may be a couple of months old in pristine condition, had any defect repaired, or pre-loved and traded in"; they are "repaired or reconditioned to 100% functionality by vetted sellers or the manufacturer"; every one goes through "multi-point inspections"; and each is listed under one of four conditions, Certified, Excellent, Very Good or Good. The page says refurbished sellers "meet rigorous standards and are continuously monitored", that every item comes with "a minimum 12-month seller guarantee", that eBay's Money Back Guarantee applies on top, and that all refurbished items come with free delivery across mainland UK.
The word to notice is seller. eBay does not refurbish anything. Its FAQ on the same page answers "Who refurbishes the items?" in two sentences: Certified Refurbished items "are refurbished by the manufacturer or manufacturer-approved vendor", and Excellent, Very Good and Good items "are refurbished by quality-vetted eBay sellers". The guarantee is the seller's too. So the badge tells you the seller passed eBay's vetting and signed up to its minimums; it does not tell you who the seller is, how they grade, or whether they pay the return postage. For those you read the listing, and on our pages the line under the eBay row.
What do the four grades mean?
eBay's programme page defines them in a sentence each, read on 03/11/2026:
- Certified: "Pristine, like-new product that was refurbished by the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved vendor."
- Excellent: "No to minimal wear, refurbished by quality-vetted sellers."
- Very Good: "Slight wear, refurbished by quality-vetted sellers."
- Good: "Moderate wear, refurbished by quality-vetted sellers."
All four, the page says, are "expertly refurbished, 100% functional and come with a one-year seller guarantee". The grades describe wear, not battery: eBay's definitions say nothing about battery health, so a Good phone's battery floor is whatever its seller promises. musicMagpie's eBay listings say 80% for Good and Very Good and 85% for Excellent, as musicMagpie on eBay sets out; the Loop Mobile and SellMyPhone listings we opened on 03/11/2026 did not state a floor. Certified is the only grade that says who did the work, and none of the seven listings we opened carried it: every refurbished eBay row on our pages that day was Excellent, Very Good or Good from a business seller. eBay's older condition, Seller refurbished, is not one of the four on the programme page.
Beside the other refurbishers the ladder looks like this. Back Market's grades are Fair, Good, Excellent and Premium, musicMagpie's Good, Very Good and Pristine, and the shops' eBay outlets use eBay's words: Currys Clearance maps its REFURB-A, B and C to Excellent, Very Good and Good, and Argos lists under the eBay names directly.

Rungs are the order within one seller, bottom to top; the same word does not mean the same thing in two shops. Every rung should be a fully working phone; read the seller’s own definition on the listing.
The rung names do not line up. eBay's Good is its bottom grade, with "moderate wear"; Back Market's bottom grade is Fair, and its Good sits one rung up. When our rows show an eBay Good at £479 and a Back Market Fair at £500 for the same phone, as they did on 03/11/2026 for the iPhone 16, you are comparing the two bottom rungs, not a Good with a Good. Refurbished phone grades explained has the full table.
The guarantee and the returns, as eBay states them
The seller guarantee. eBay's guarantee page, read at 16:40 on 03/11/2026, says every refurbished item "comes with a minimum 12-month seller guarantee (available on orders sent to a Mainland UK delivery address)", and that it "covers any defects in functionality". The seller sends the terms "in a separate email" after the order is confirmed, or puts them in the parcel, and eBay tells you to keep them for the whole year: a claim goes to the seller, using the contact details in that document. On the listing itself the block reads "One-year guarantee included. Provided by the seller, UK only." It is a guarantee against faults, not against wear or a dropped screen, and the FAQ adds that it "does not affect your statutory rights".
The Money Back Guarantee. The programme FAQ says a refurbished purchase "is protected by our eBay Money Back Guarantee for 30 days from the delivery date in case your item doesn't arrive or wasn't what was described", with eBay stepping in if the seller does not resolve it. Is it safe to buy tech on eBay? has the policy's terms.
Returns. The FAQ's answer to "What is the return policy for Refurbished items?" is one line: "You have 30 days to return a refurbished item." What it does not say is who pays to send it back, and the listings differ. Of the seven we opened on 03/11/2026, Loop Mobile's three, musicMagpie's and Argos's read "Seller pays for return postage", with Argos giving 60 days rather than 30, and SellMyPhone's two read "Buyer pays for return postage. If you use an eBay delivery label, it will be deducted from your refund amount." Same badge, same one-year guarantee, different cost to change your mind.
Packaging and accessories. The FAQ says refurbished products "may come in original, plain or seller-branded packaging" and come "with original or new generic accessories, where applicable", and twice tells you to check the seller's listing. In practice that means a plain box and a third-party cable unless the listing says otherwise.
How to read the seller line on our pages
Since 31/10/2026 every eBay row on our product pages prints a line under the shop's name: who sells the listing, their positive feedback when they have 50 ratings or more, and whether they take returns and for how long. On 03/11/2026 the seven rows in the table below read:
- "Business seller · 99.9% · 30-day returns" for SellMyPhone's iPhone 17 and Galaxy S24 Ultra;
- "Business seller · 99.6% · 30-day returns" for Loop Mobile's iPhone 16, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 14;
- "Business seller · 99.1% · 30-day returns" for musicMagpie's Apple Watch Ultra 3;
- "Argos on eBay · 99% · 60-day returns" for Argos's Galaxy A17.
The line names the shop when the seller is a shop's own outlet, Currys or Argos today, and says business or private seller otherwise. It does not yet say who pays the return postage, so for that one fact open the listing and read its Returns line before you buy. A private seller's row can also say "no returns"; none of the refurbished rows in this post did.
Seven badged listings against our rows, 03/11/2026
Every listing below carried the eBay Refurbished block. Prices are the listing's price at the time given; our row for the same product is the one on our page that afternoon, with its read time, and the other refurbishers' rows are ours too, each with the time they were read.

Every one of the seven listing prices matched our row to the penny, which is what the rows are for: the refurbished eBay row is the cheapest fixed-price listing that passed our checks in that condition, read within the last few hours. The two Loop Mobile iPhones were down to their last unit, so by the time you read this the row may name another seller at another price; the page shows what is there now.

When eBay Refurbished beats Back Market, musicMagpie and Amazon Renewed, and when it does not
On 03/11/2026 our refurbished hub listed 115 products with a refurbished price, and on 65 of them the cheapest refurbished row was an eBay listing. On the other 50 it was Back Market, musicMagpie, refurbed, Gadcet, Amazon or a shop's own refurbished range. Three patterns from the seven pages above and the hub as a whole:
eBay wins on the phones everyone refurbishes. On the four phones where our Back Market row was in stock that day, the eBay listing was cheaper by £10 (Galaxy S24 Ultra, £460 against £470 Fair), £8 (iPhone 14, £239 against £247 Fair), £21 (iPhone 16, £479 against a day-old £500 Fair) and £48 (iPhone 15 Pro, £449 against a day-old £497 Fair). In each case the eBay phone was a Good, eBay's bottom grade, against Back Market's bottom grade, so the comparison is fair on wear. The eBay phone comes with a 12-month seller guarantee and 30 days to return it; Back Market's comes with its own 12-month warranty, 30 days, and a Quality Assurance Fee added at checkout, as Is Back Market legit? explains. Where the gap is £10, the postage rule decides it: SellMyPhone's S24 Ultra buyer pays to return, so a change of mind costs part of that £10.
musicMagpie and Amazon Renewed were dearer where they appeared. Our musicMagpie rows sat £51 above the eBay listing on the iPhone 16, £91 on the iPhone 15 Pro, £51 on the iPhone 14 and £120 on the iPhone 17; the iPhone 14 row was read at 00:17 that day, the other three on 02/11 or earlier, so a day or more old; Back Market or musicMagpie has the two side by side. Amazon's refurbished rows were £78 above eBay on the iPhone 15 Pro and £20 above on the iPhone 14, both read the same afternoon. On the Apple Watch Ultra 3 the eBay listing was musicMagpie's own, selling through eBay with 30 days' returns, £13.71 under a new watch at John Lewis and Amazon.
New undercut refurbished on 16 of the 65 pages. The Galaxy A17 is the one in the table: Argos's Very Good on eBay at £130.04, with 60 days' returns and a one-year guarantee, against a new phone at A1 Tech Deals for £128.99 the same afternoon. The same happened that day on, among others, the Galaxy S26 512GB (Amazon new £702.85 against musicMagpie on eBay £769.59), the Beats Studio Pro (Amazon new £249 against Argos on eBay £267.71), the PS5 Slim (new on eBay £516.70 against a refurbished £580.99) and the Pixel Watch 4 (new on eBay £260.69 against a refurbished £329.98). A badge is not a discount. Read the new rows on the same page before you pay for a refurbished one, and new or refurbished: when is the saving worth it? says how big a gap is worth it.
| Product | eBay | Back Market | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple iPhone 14 128GB | £239.00 | £247.00 | eBay by £8.00 |
| Apple iPhone 15 Pro 256GB | £449.00 | £497.00 | eBay by £48.00 |
| Apple iPhone 16 128GB | £479.00 | £500.00 | eBay by £21.00 |
| Samsung GALAXY S24 ULTRA 12/256 BLACK | £460.00 | £470.00 | eBay by £10.00 |
Of 4 products with a refurbished price at both shops today, eBay is cheaper on 4, Back Market on 0.
Retailer links may earn OwlyFinds a commission or a small fee per click. It never changes the order. How we make money
Who the eBay sellers were is worth a line. Of the 65 pages where eBay was cheapest, 11 were a shop's own outlet (musicMagpie on six, Argos on four, Currys Clearance on one) and 54 were independent business sellers, 33 of them in all, from Loop Mobile and SellMyPhone to Innofinity and Clove Technology. Every one of the 65 rows was a business seller with returns accepted. The badge is the floor they share; the seller line is how you tell them apart.

What to do
- Treat the badge as a floor, not a verdict. It means a vetted seller, a grade on eBay's scale, a 12-month guarantee against faults for mainland UK addresses, 30 days' returns and free mainland delivery. It does not mean eBay checked your phone.
- Read the grade as wear only. Good is eBay's bottom rung, "moderate wear"; battery health is whatever the listing promises, and many listings promise nothing. If battery matters, buy from a seller that states a floor, or budget for a battery.
- Open the listing and read the Returns line. Seller pays and buyer pays carry the same badge; on a phone that is £10 cheaper than Back Market's, a buyer-pays return can eat the saving.
- Keep the guarantee email. The one-year guarantee is the seller's, claimed through the seller, with the terms sent after the order or put in the box. Without them you have only your statutory rights and, for 30 days, the Money Back Guarantee.
- Compare with new on the same page. On 16 of the 65 pages where eBay was the cheapest refurbished option on 03/11/2026, a new product was cheaper still.
For the three shops that sell their own returns and trade-ins under the badge, see musicMagpie on eBay, Currys Clearance on eBay and Argos on eBay.
