Second hand PS5: what it costs in the UK, and what to check
What a used PS5 costs on eBay today, model by model, against refurbished and new, and what to check before you buy one second hand.

On this page
A second hand PS5 is the cheapest way to own one, as long as it works and the seller has signed it out of their account. We priced used consoles on eBay on 20/10/2026, model by model, and set them against the cheapest refurbished and new ones on the same day.
How much is a second hand PS5?
On 20/10/2026 a used PS5 Slim on eBay cost £439.99 to £495.95 for the disc model and £390 to £414.70 for the Digital Edition. A used PS5 Pro cost £749.99 to £895, so it saved much less against a new one.
| PS5 | Price on 20/10/2026 |
|---|---|
| PS5 Slim (disc) | Used on eBay £439.99 to £495.95; refurbished from £577; new £569 |
| PS5 Slim Digital | Used on eBay £390 to £414.70; refurbished from £519; new £519.99 |
| PS5 Pro | Used on eBay £749.99 to £895; refurbished from £843.99; new £789.99 |
So the cheapest used disc Slim was £129.01 under new and the cheapest used Digital £129.99 under, before postage. The cheapest used Pro, £749.99 plus £8.99 postage from a business seller, was £31 under Argos.
Is a second hand PS5 cheaper than a refurbished one?
Yes, on 20/10/2026, because refurbished consoles saved nothing that day. Back Market's disc Slim was £577, £8 more than new at Currys, and its Digital Edition £519, 99p under Argos. Amazon Renewed's PS5 Pro was £843.99, £54 more than new at Argos. On eBay, refurbished consoles cost more again: £646.59 for the disc Slim, £537.59 for the Digital and £970 for the Pro.
Sony's own Certified Refurbished Slims were the exception, at £479.99 (disc) and £429.99 (Digital), but both were out of stock on 20/10/2026. So when a refurbished console costs as much as a new one, buy new; when you want to pay less, second hand is the only route that day. Our refurbished PS5 guide covers each seller and when refurbished does pay.

The boxes show our latest check of each shop. On 20/10/2026 the disc box's Amazon refurbished row, £549.99, was the original 2020 console (model CFI-1000) rather than a Slim, and Currys showed its Digital Edition as out of stock on its search page.
What should you check before buying a used PS5?
- The model. A Slim belongs to Sony's CFI-2000 model group; the original 2020 console is CFI-1000. Ask the seller for the model number; a good listing names it.
- The disc drive, on a disc model. Ask for a video of it reading a disc, or play one when you collect. A Digital Edition has no drive; Argos sold Sony's add-on drive at £69.99 on 20/10/2026.
- The controller. Drift, where the camera or a character moves when you are not touching the stick, is the common fault. Ask whether the controller is Sony's own and test both sticks.
- That it can go online. A console Sony has banned from PlayStation Network cannot sign in, and you cannot tell from photos. Ask the seller to show it signed in, or test it before you pay.
- That it is signed out. The seller should sign out of their PlayStation account and reset the console to factory settings, so it is not still linked to them.
- The box and cables. Sony lists, in the box of its refurbished Digital Edition, the console, a DualSense controller, an HDMI cable, a power cord, a USB cable and the stand feet. Missing cables are cheap to replace; a missing controller is not.
- The warranty. Sony gives a 12-month manufacturer's warranty, which its refurbished pages state (read on 20/10/2026). On a used console, ask for the receipt to see whether any is left; most private sellers offer no returns of their own.
Where should you buy a second hand PS5?
eBay, paying through its checkout. eBay's Money Back Guarantee, read on 20/10/2026, covers you for 30 days from delivery if the console does not arrive, arrives faulty or damaged, or does not match the listing, including from a private seller. It also says it "is not a product warranty", so it will not help with a fault that appears in month three.
From a UK private seller, the price you see already includes eBay's Buyer Protection fee: on a £400 console that fee is £14.70, so the listing shows £414.70 (eBay's fee page, read on 20/10/2026). Business sellers' prices include the same protection at no extra cost; check the returns line on each listing either way. In a private sale outside eBay, you have none of this, so pay only when you have seen it working. How to read an eBay seller and listing.
Used consoles on Amazon cost more on 20/10/2026: marketplace sellers had the disc Slim, used, from £545.98, close to new.
Second hand, refurbished or open box?
Second hand means sold as used, usually by a private seller, often with no returns beyond eBay's guarantee. It was the cheapest on 20/10/2026, about £115 to £130 under new on a Slim.
Refurbished means checked by a business and sold with a warranty or returns. On 20/10/2026 it cost about the same as new or more, except Sony's own refurbished Slims, which were out of stock. Refurbished and second hand, in plain terms.
Open box is eBay's "Opened, never used": a new console in an opened box. On 20/10/2026 five open-box disc Slims cost £486.10 to £525, all from private sellers, and the PS5 Pro started at £975.70, more than new.
What to do
- Check the new price first: on 20/10/2026 it was £569 for the disc Slim, £519.99 for the Digital and £789.99 for the Pro. What each PS5 costs new.
- For a Slim, a used one from an eBay seller with a good feedback record saves about £115 to £130. Buy through eBay's checkout and test the console when it arrives.
- For a PS5 Pro, buy new unless a used one is well over £30 under Argos: that was the whole saving on 20/10/2026.
- Check the model, the disc drive, the controller and that it signs in to PlayStation Network before the 30 days run out.
